POLYCOM iPower 9400

The iPower 9400 is BIDMCs most recent acquisition for videoconferencing and telemedicine. The iPower architecture supercharges an Intel processor into a state of the art videoconferencing tool for sharing voice, video, and data over ISDN or IP. One of its newest features allows for native resolution of "People" (regular NTSC video) and "Content" (VGA). Because its based on a Windows 2000 operating system, the variety of collaboration options are limited only by your imagination.

  • Easily Shared Voice, Video and Data
    • high quality audio (14KHz)
    • 30 fps video (television standard... no jaggies!)o
    • high resolution images (1024x768 - VGA)
    • simultaneous transmission of "people" (voice and video) and "content" (presentation materials like PowerPoint™)
  • Fully functioning computer with Windows 2000
  • Integrated Application Sharing (any software application loaded into the iPower system can be used by participants at remote locations)
  • ImageShare II (a device that lets users just plug their laptops directly on the tabletop and push one button to select or delelect the content).
  • Laptop Input (directly connect a PC in the back of the system which allows users to share PC content).

Setting Up For Video Conference

BIDMC's iPower systems are currently in use in the Emergency Department and Feldberg basement for Interpreter's CareLink.

We are in the process of installing units on East and West campus. Please call the TeleMedicine Coordinator 7-0594 to determine current availability and process for equipment set-up.

Using The iPower 9400 Videoconference Unit

Using a videoconference unit is fairly simple, and we insure that you get off to a good start by having a TeleMedicine Specialist available at the start of a call to provide a brief overview on how to use the remote control, to initiate the call, and to ensure that all the elements are properly set and functioning.

To begin, the system is configured to automatically launch the videoconference interface. You'll know the configuration is complete and you're ready to make a call when you see yourself on the screen.

iPower systems include both a keyboard and a remote control. The remote control is easy to use for videocalls; the keyboard is necessary for administrator applications and when you need to type text. To initiate a videoconference, you simply dial the far site's number or wait for the auto-answer feature to engage the call, similar to what you do when you use the telephone.

Depress the CALL/ADD button . This will cause the system to "wake up". The camera will automatically "spin" to the front of the unit and the "Make a Call" menu will emerge on the display screen.

If we are the receive site, simply wait for the system to AUTOMATICALLY ANSWER the incoming call.

If we are the originating site, we need to place the call. Some speed dial numbers are available. Use the ARROW keys to highlight DIRECTORY and press ENTER. The "Local Directory" Menu screen will appear. SCROLL through the listed names using the ARROWS. Once the appropriate site is highlighted, press ENTER.

To call other locations, use the keypad to type the far-end number into the box just below the Directory botton in the "Make a Call" view, then press ENTER.

Once the call is connected, check audio levels. Most systems are begin on mute to ensure privacy. You can unmute the system as well as adjust the volume and change the camera’s view for either the near or far site. Use the buttons on the bottom left to MUTE/UNMUTE and adjust VOLUME.

Also check the video. To cange the camer, use the ARROW buttons on the bottom right to move the camera Left, Right, Up, Down, Zoom in, Zoom Out. To switch between near and far end, press enter.

You interact by looking at the people on the screen and talking in a natural voice. There may be a split second delay between when you speak and when the far site(s) respond. One hint is to pause when you are finished a thought to allow the other location(s) to comment.

You might supplement the meeting with visual information by switching to a document camera to show a drawing, chart or document; or use other peripherals like a VCR, Computer Graphics converter or a White Board.

.

When the videoconference is complete, simpply HANG UP.

  Troubleshooting

    • No Power - Make sure unit is plugged into cart and/or into wall outlet. Turn on main power switch.
    • No Image on Screen - be sure power is turned on for both the CPU and monitor.
    • No Interface on Screen - launch the application by either double clicking onthe Polycom Collaboration shortcut on the desktop or choosing it from the Start Menu.
    • Call Cannot Be Completed - confirm that the far end site is on and ready to receive a call. Check network connection to confirm your unit is operational.
    • Network not available - if wireless, check the airport; if wired, confirm cable is secure. Go into Settings and confirm that proper card is enabled
