Video Cassette Recorder (VCR)

Panasonic AG1980 VCR

The VCRs used by the medical center come from a variety of manufacturers (JVC, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Sony). Some are simply VHS players;others are playaer/recorders. None are connected to an antenae so the channel tuners will not be operational and typically the recording function will not be usable..

Equipment commonly used at BIDMC:

Despite the variety of manufacturers, they generally have the same functions:

  • play
  • fast forward
  • fast reverse
  • some come with remote controls.

Setting Up The VCR

  1. Connect unit to a power outlet and turn on all equipment.
  2. Connect RCA cables from the audio and video out of the VCR to the audio and video in of the videoconference codec.
NOTE: the VCR is typically connected to the videoconference codec; it can be directly connected to the monitor inputs.
  3. Select the near-end VCR source on the videoconference system remote or the line-in on the monitor if bypassing the videoconference system and connecting directly to the monitor.
  4. The videoconference VCR default records the video from the near end and the audio from both near end and far end. To record the far-end video instead, you must change the video settings on the videoconference system to far-end record and reboot the syste

Using The VCR

  1. Place VHS tape in tape loader and gently push in. Most VCRs have sensors which will automatically load the tape from here.
  2. Please play on either the face of the VCR or by using the remote.
  3. Make sure the monitor is on. If using the videoconference system select the nearend VCR source; if the VCR is connected directly to the monitor, toggle between line in and tv to find the VHS signal.
  Troubleshooting

  • No Power - Make sure unit is plugged into cart and/or into wall outlet. Turn on main power switch located on left side of unit.
  • Unit turned on but nothing is displayed on Television Monitor - Make sure video cable is connected to the video input (not output) of the videoconference system. Make sure the VCR source is selected on the videoconference system remote.
  • Unit turned on but there is no sound - Make sure audio cable is connected to the audio input (not output) of the videoconference system. Make sure the VCR source is selected on the videoconference system remote. Make sure the volume is up using the videoconference remote control (not the television volume)
  • Color not accurate - check if cables are connected properly.
